Airtel has forged an alliance with State Bank of India to offer mobile banking services. Airtel and SBI have formed a joint venture which will offer financial products at affordable cost to the citizens in areas which are unbanked and under banked.

The customers of Airtel will be able to avail the banking services by visiting the retail and distributor outlets and open new SBI bank accounts and avail other banking products and services.

While 35% of the people in India use banking services more than 60% have access to the mobile phones. While SBI has 13000 branches, Airtel has covered 5100 towns and nearly 500,000 villages through its network of 1.5 million retailers and distributors across India.

It is a win win situation for both the mobile operators and the banks in India as on the one hand it will help the banking sector to fulfill its commitment of financial inclusion, the mobile operators will be in a position to offer more value added services to their customers.

Similarly the ICICI bank has tied up with Vodafone.
